Bio

Barry Canton is a founder and Chief Technology Officer at synthetic biology company Ginkgo Bioworks, where he is responsible for overall foundry technology strategy and platform development for cell programming.[2][4][7] He holds a PhD in Biological Engineering from MIT and an MEngSc in Mechanical Engineering from University College Dublin, and co-founded Ginkgo Bioworks with MIT colleagues, spinning the company out of MIT in the late 2000s.[4][6][10][12] Originally from Dublin, Ireland, he has been a key figure in the synthetic biology community, including work with the Synthetic Biology Working Group at MIT.[4][10][12]
